The TechBoston Academy class of 09 Became TBA’s 4th graduating class last week and celebrated their graduation ceremony at Boston’s historic Fanueil Hall. More then 800 of their friends and families came to join in the celebration, as many of them embarked on their journeys to college and beyond.

Combined, the TBA class of 2009 earned more than $2,000,000in scholarship money, with 32 of the 80 graduating seniors earning John Adams Scholarships that offered them fully paid tuition at any Massachusetts state institution.

The TechBoston Academy class of 09 had their senior prom last night at the Vennezia restaurant in Boston. After enjoying lots of food and drink (Pepsi of course!), they danced and celebrated late into the night, before many of them continued on to after parties or out to IHOP for a delicious pancake breakfast to top off their evenings!

]]> Seven Signs of the Apocalypse rip 
TechBoston Academy junior LaQeena delivered the opening address at a Facing History benefit to recognize the winners of the Margot Stern Strom Teaching Award. Governor Deval Patrick and Mayor Thomas Menino joined a thousand other donors and dignitaries, to recognize the hard work done by several educators in bringing the Facing History & Ourselves curriculum to life in their classrooms. This coming summer, LaQeena will join eight other TBA students and their partners from Hudson High School on a State Dept sponsored exchange visit to Rwanda, where they will study the effects and aftermath of the 1993 genocide that cost the lives of so many.
Officials of the Boston Public Schools were notified in April that TechBoston Academy has received accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC). The Commission’s decision was based upon review of an evaluation report prepared by a visiting committee to TechBoston in October 2008.

Mary Skipper, Headmaster, stated- “We feel that the Commission’s decision confirms the results of the extensive self-study which our faculty and administration conducted for over a year. We are also convinced that the findings of our self-study, coupled with recommendations of the Commission’s visiting committee, will assist us in developing priorities for further improvements in the high school.”
The New England Association of Schools and Colleges is a voluntary membership organization of approximately 1850 public and independent schools, colleges and universities. Of these, 650 schools have been accredited through the Association’s Commission on Public Secondary Schools.

March 13th, 2009, Mass College of Art & Design- Students from TechBoston Academy and around the greater Boston area came together at MassArt last Friday for the 2009 Youth Leadership Conference: “Art Is Action”. This student run event consisted of a powerful sequence of workshops and performances, addressing youth issues through various art forms. 3 groups from the TBA Poetry Club presented workshops, and a dozen other TBA students participated.
“Word Up-Dismantling Negative stereotypes of Boston Teens” led by Michael Leary, Nicholas Ferguson, Richard Jarrell, and Dominique Johnson.

Are there issues in your personal life, community, neighborhood, and school that you believe others misjudge or create negative stereotypes about? Come learn how you can use your poetry, words, and artistic skills to undo these misconceptions and shine a new light on a misunderstood issue in your life.
“Get Your Words Heard” led by Ayan Abdullahi and Hennessy Cruz
Are there emotions, feelings, or other unheard ideas that are bottled up in you that you need to give a voice to? If so, then you need to attend this workshop to learn about a large variety of peoty art styles and forms that you can use to express these stifled emotions. Participants will walk away with a variety of ways to show feelings and release their inner selves.
“My Words are My Future” led by Laqueena Williams and Cassandra Clark
How do you envision yourself in the future? Who do you want to be and what mark do you plan on making in the world? Make a personal commitment to be the future self you envision by learning how to write a future poem. Do only will you create a future poem, but you will email it to your future self to make a binding commitment to “be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Students and teachers from TBA took time out of their weekends this morning to prepare and host a pancake breakfast fundraiser. The money raised from the event will go towards their upcoming trip to Europe as part of their class entitled “Facing History & Ourselves” in which they study various genocides of the 20th century, and that culminates with the students and teachers visiting the Auschwitz concentration camp in Poland over April break. Today TechBoston Academy recognized the significant academic and social achievements of some of its students in a quarterly awards ceremony. Students from across all grades met to participate in the ceremony, and were awarded certificates of achievement that included celebration of making honor roll, high honors, honorable mention, and perfect attendance.
After the ceremony, students were rewarded for their efforts with their very own private wing party, that was served up by TBA teachers and administrators. TechBoston Academy’s teachers and administrators would like to once again congratulate all of the award winners, and express the hope that this is just the first of many such honors that our students will earn as they continua with their academic careers.

As TechBoston Academy begins it’s transition to a 6-12 institution, we will be using this site to communicate important information and updates about the upcoming expansion. More in-depth information will be forthcoming, however below is an overview of some of the changes that are planned for the 2009-2010 school year.
Pilot School Expansion to Middle School
Grades: 6 to 9
Hours: 8:30 to 3:30
Location: 18 Croftland Street Dorchester (Formerly Woodrow Wilson Middle School)
- Mandatory Uniform Policy for grades 6th-9th
- College prep focus with high academic expectations
- Extended Day Program to 4:30 (TBD)
- Small Class size (20 students)
- Inclusion Program of students on IEP
- Mentors and tutors for all students
- Integration of technology
- Part of Boston Public Schools’ lottery process
- East Zone for grades 6th-8th
